Hello Peter:

Your proposed 'smart selection' looks fine. With respect to
further filtering for zones of high background I think this
could be left to the users. We may provide a library function
which could analyze a set of shadowgrams for hot pixels
according to user defined criteria.

One type of background event which we may want to include in
the 'smart' selection is external bursts of noise such as
those we experience approaching the radiation belts. These
would not me confined to a small area on the detector but
spread out over the entire active area. 

This feature may be complex to implement, but it would be
very useful not only to exclude noise bursts, but also to
select specifically events from X-ray bursts. In principle
we could extract the required information from the event
timing and grey filter data available in the full-imaging
and restricted imaging data.
