SDAST Chat #110: Wednesday 1st February 2006 Participants: Peter Kretschmar, Silvia Martinez-Nunez, Jerome Chenevez, Carol Anne Oxborrow, Niels-Joergen Westergaard Subjects discussed: Email problems in Valencia Lessons learnt from the Earth Observations: - It takes 7 months to integrate updated software at ISDC - j_calib_gain_fitting needs updating to handle weak calibration spectra coupled with grey filtering - How to make OSA analyse slews - Spectrum of the DXB - Earth shine looks steeper than expected with a photon index of about 2 - Sergei Molkov managed to make spectra with index 1.5 - Need for a better ARF to extract Earthshine - Absolutely NO sources seen - requires a separate diffuse source analysis - Nice light curves in different energy bands clearly show DXB disappearing behind the Earth New SCREWs and SPRs: - j_ima_mosaicking needs some improvements for angles larger than 20 degrees and significance maps - j_calib_gain_fitting needs updating to add weak calibration spectra together - Scripts must be updated to handle the new spectral extraction tool - Timing of OSA 6.0 will determine whether new source extraction module will be available or not. `Not before the summer' is only known schedule for OSA 6.0. - New source extraction software in general Next SDAST meeting: everyone to send availability in and email to NJW Feedback on CAO's webpages: - Not much content to comment on yet - Forum should be split up into more pages for readability - ISDC representative rotation should be included Imaging and source extraction status: Future timescale not very clear - Will take a month before first coarse spectra are generated - Refinement will take alot longer - A library of common functions is already available: jmx_lib_pif ADD: Planned 10.0 release is next week, all contributions needed NOW - Most changes involve including j_ima_iros and j_ima_mosaicking - More extensive changes must wait till version 10.1 AIs: None completed. CAO's webpages moved to regular work AOB: Chat meetings once every 3 weeks from now on. Action Items: AI060201_1 ALL Feb 15 2006 Everyone to send NJW an email with their OPEN availability for an SDAST meetingin late March, early April 2006 **** Logging Started : Wed Feb 01 11:00:24 MET 2006 > Hello Silvia, how are you? I hope you've solved the problem with your Good morgen Carol Anne and Niels Joergen ! > email server. I've had a couple of emails I cc'd to you rejected by your > server on the grounds that the might have been contaminated by sobig.worm, Hello Silvia, how are you ? Thanks for your contributions to the SVR END > or some such name. Were you aware of this? END The university people has told me that the problem is solved, but I'm not completely sure about it. I was not aware about the problem you are told me. Could you please try to send me the error message by e-mail ? it looks like today is working properly. END *** jerome (~jerome@130.226.216.3) has joined channel #jemxadr Bonjour! *** peter (~pkretsch@isdcsf5.unige.ch) has joined channel #jemxadr Hello everybody! > Yes, I'll send you the return message if it happens again. Hi Peter, You welcome Niels Joergen ! I'm sorry it took 10 days to the e-mail to arrive to DK ! Amazing ! Post is even faster !! END > nice to have you with us! END Thanks Carol Anne ! END Hello Carol Anne, Jérôme and Peter Salut Peter! > Okay, I think the gang's all here. Stefan is detained by teaching duties, Buenos dias Peter ! Bonjour J´er^ome ! END > so shall we get started ? END Y Y > Point 0 on the agenda: happy new year to all of you. I hope 2006 is living > up, or down to your expectations and that you all had a good, restful and > gift-filled Christmas. Any comments? END Yes, Taht is alraedy long ago... END > Time flies when you're having fun....END > Right point one on the agenda: lessons learnt from the Earth Observations. > I have two comments here: first it takes 7 months for new software to get > integrated at ISDC. Second there is a problem processing JEM-X calibration > data in the presence of strong grey filtering, so we need and update of > j_calib_gain_fitting that can add weak spectra together. That being said > I'm working on a tool to create gain history tables from scratch to bypass > the ISDC system when it's acting up. These correct gain history tables will > be available through my webpage. What have the rest of you learnt from the > Earth observations? END I guess lesson 0 has been how to cheat the system to analyse SLEW ScWs turning them to POINTING. END > Hello?? Didn't anyone else learn something constructive? END The spectrum of the DXB - Earth shine looks steeper than expected with a photon index of about 2. However, I've seen a mail from Andrii where he tells that Sergei Molkov has done a different analysis with an ARF that he has derived by himself and got a photon index about 1.5 which is much closer to the expected value. What is still missing in this interpretation is an assessment of how far down in energy we still see the Earth shine and how do we derive the proper ARF that, as you know, also depends on the software that extract s the spectrum. And for the images: I have, and others have, looked through all the JMX1 images during the observation and seen NO sources, not even a glimpse of Auroral light. If we want to see e.g. the rim of the Earth we need a separate analysis (nad it is not clear that it is possible). END What do you meán by "a separate analysis"? END So do you see a negative 'source' in any way? * jerome I have not see ANYthing! END You can tell that I'm far from my old standards by not just having looked myself ... END All large scale structures are wiped out in j_ima_iros so no 'negative' source is seen and that's why a separate analysis by dedicated software starting from the assumption that the source is diffuse (distributed) and * njw doing the analysis from that point. END OK! Has Carl tried anything? END I think so, but at the Monday meeting he did not report anything about that, so he also saw nothing - and his analysis suffers from the same lacks wrt. imaging of the diffuse sources. END I should mention that we get nice light curves in different energy bands that clearly show the DXB disappearing and reappearing at low energy with increasing smaller amplitude as the energy increases. END > Any other comments on the Earth Observations ? END N N N > I think we can skip over the next agenda point since I haven't had time to > take a look through the outstanding SPRs and SCREWs: are any of you expecting > to submit crucial SPRs or SCREWs for OSA 6.0? END Submit new ones? No! END N Fixing existing ones - maybe if somehow I found more time ... END Yes. I have to improve j_ima_mosaic for its energy band selection and for the distorsion effects a angles larger than 20 degrees from the centre of the mosaic images. END Also the significance maps should be improved. END > Any more comments on planned improvements to the software? As already > stated I'll be updating j_calib_gain_fitting so it can cope with the > shrinking intensities of the calibration sources that now cause problems > when there's grey filtering. No planned changes for the scripts. If there are some open SPRs/SCREWS, I will closed then for the time of the deadline of OSA 6.0. END > If there are no more comments, let's move on to find a date for the next > SDAST meeting. It's tentatively scheduled for early April. When would suit > everyone best? END Don't be too optimistic - don't we all hope for a new spectral extraction software which would surely mean adapting the scripts? END Oh, you are right Peter ! END I'm afraid that the new spectral extraction (j_src_properties) will not be ready for OSA6.0. I'm working on setting up the framework and Niels is trying to put together the inner working but there is no time for that right now. END Do we have any idea when this OSA 6 is planned...? END > Yes, that's another important consideration, which we should discuss. Does > anyone (Peter?) know when to expect a freeze for OSA 6.0? END I think I can remember that Stephane told me it would most likely not happen before the Summer, unless something serious does justify an earlier release. END > Then there's some hope to get major improvements done. END Well, in that case I'll take back my earlier statement about j_src_prop. END > Any more comments on SPRs, SCREWs and OSA 6.0 ? END N N N M N > Okay, the next SDAST meeting. Most of early April looks good for me. > Thursday 6th and Friday 7th look especially empty. What about your preferences? END For me it's a rather busy time with, e.g., the Larssons visiting us on exactly those dates More precisely April 5-10. April 6/7 is also a critical date for AO-4 preparation. How about April 3/4? I would prefer not I maybe in France on the monday... END > The following week is Easter holiday and I really need to be with the A week after Easter is AO deadline. > children. 20th and 21st are are also clear for me. How long will you be in > france for Jerome. END This appears to be not so easy, and with others not 'present' such as NL, > Okay, this calls for everyone to send NJW an email with their complete list I suggest that you send an email to me with possible days end of March/begin April END > of availability in April. END * jerome How about end of April...? END OK, will do. END > Great minds think alike! So that's an AI on everyone - and all our friends. > END > Any more comments? END N Ok. I'll send an e-mail to NJW ! END > Okay, I'd like some feedback on my webpages, if you've looked at them. I'd > hoped to populate the new forum somewhat this week, but of course I've spent > the time on gain calibration for the EO instead, so perhaps there's not so > much to feedback about. Comments please. END Very nice! Could you also add to the forum a link to the sheduled ISDC representant turn? Thanks! Generally, I think they are fine, but maybe you need to break up the forum in more individual pages for readability. END There are great ! No suggestions for the moment ! END > I'll do both, when I get the time. Thanks for the suggestions. END > Well, there's still not much to comment on, so perhaps you'll have more to No comments from my side right now, except that these pages are very nice to have END > say when there's more stuff. Let's push on: NJW can you give us a clear > picture of the current status and future plans for imaging and source > extraction? END If you by clear picture mean a detailed time schedule the answer is no. In an earlier comment I have said something about the work split and my guess is that in about a month we will have our first running version. This means that it will read the events etc. and produce a spectrum. I expect the verification and refinement to last much longer. > Well that's a clear goal and a goodish schedule in one. END The first step to separate out what we think are common functions has been done with the 'jmx_lib_pif' library (common means between j_ima_iros and * njw j_src_properties) END > Any more comments on imaging and source properties extraction? END N N N I have yet another meeting coming up, sorry. Regarding the ADD I will try to do my part this week still - assuming no more special observations come up ... END Thank you Peter! END > So about the ADD.......what do you want to say Jerome? END Well, I have got NJW, Silvia's and your part, so it was most to remaind Peter about his part... It is just done! I think this issue 10 will mainly be an updated of the imaging parts of the S/W. Of course I will incorporate the other things I hav got but I have no more time to go through a deeper and larger updating of the document this will be for a later 10.1 issue. Is it OK? END > Yes, the important thing is to get j_ima_iros and your mosaicking in. END > Any more comments on ADD? END N I plan to release it next week. So please give me your inputs ASAP! END N > Okay, now any news on the AI front? Anyone accidently performed and AI, or > had their mother do one for them? END The son of my mother does not have any AI :-) END No AI on me :-) END None from me END > Mine is still ongoing, and I think I'll move it to regular work now. END > So last point on the agenda: AOB - anyone got anything else they want to > get off their chests? I'd like to know if we should have our next meeting > in two weeks, or is once a month enough for chat meetings? END 1/month is fine for me. END Maybe at the moment is enough 1/month ! END I'd suggest three weeks END That's a good comprise NJW ! END > Every 3 weeks is a good compromise - let it be so! Any other things to > discuss? Lunch perhaps? END Just a litlle ad: have a look at today's ISOC/ESAC POM ! END N ! It a bit early for lunch in Spain ! END Will do that, Jérôme, else no more business. Have a nice afternoon, bye END > I'll take a look - anything I can steal for my webpage? Chat willl all of you in 3 weeks ! 22nd of February , it isn't ? At the same time ? ENd *** njw has left channel #jemxadr : (njw) > Have a good lunch and a productive afternoon everyone. END Bye! END Hej, hej !
